The Gong Shed
All Ages

The Gong Shed was designed and fabricated by students and staff from the Masters program at the University of Tasmania School of Architecture and Design.

The structure of the shed is constructed from 84 plywood components precision cut on a CNC router and assembled with rubber mallets.

The cladding of the structure is fabricated from aluminium, acrylic and plywood, cut and milled on a CNC router.

The gongs are fabricated from various thicknesses of aluminium formed by a robot using a process called incremental forming, where the robot exerts pressure to gradually deform flat sheets into three dimensional forms. The profiles of the gongs optimise the resonance of the material.
