Woolton is the project of musical soul mates Jack Howe and Alexander Raw. Inspired by a longstanding appreciation for alt-country gems the likes of Wilco and MJ Lenderman, Woolton was officially born after attending a life-affirming, (albeit very sweaty), Andy Golledge gig at Old Bar in Fitzroy in late 2023. “We need to create something like this” was the persistent thinking the followed their experience. Woolton was born shortly after. Self-described as “dark country twang” and hailing from Launceston (kanamaluka) and Melbourne (naarm), Woolton released their debut album HOWDY in 2024, with their newest single, The Going, being released just weeks ago. Expect twangy western guitars and the familiar country-music urge to tuck your thumbs into your belt loops and two-step, yet different: Jack and Alex’s indie-rock upbringing weaves a pleasant thread through their songwriting, providing a foil to the yeehaw’s and slide guitars. Nevertheless, to describe Woolton using their own words we say: “Giddy-up!”.
